First Insights from DUT Call 2022

The first call of the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership was launched in 2022 in collaboration with 27 European countries and the European Commission. The purpose of the call is to support transnational research and/or innovation projects addressing urban challenges to help cities in their transition towards a more sustainable economy and functioning. The challenges are grouped into three themes called Transition Pathways: Positive Energy Districts (PED), the 15-Minute City (15mC) and Circular Urban Economies (CUE).

The first stage of the DUT Call 2022 closed on 21 November 2022. More than 1600 project partners applied for approximately 210 million Euros in funding in 188 proposals. 78 proposals were invited to the second stage which closed on 3 May 13.00 CET. 48 proposals were suggested for funding.

The research and innovation projects to be funded in the DUT call 2022 address one or several of the nine call topics within the three Transition Pathways.

Positive Energy Districts Pathway (PED)

The PED-projects suggested for funding in DUT Call 2022 will have a strong focus on making the energy transition an inclusive endeavour. They will embed technological solutions and practical tools into specific socio-cultural and socio-economic settings. Additionally, they will explore human-centred, community-driven, and place-based governance processes. With partners from 20 countries and 30 municipalities involved in the projects, we expect valuable and significant contributions to facilitating and mainstreaming energy transition strategies and PED implementation.

15-minutes City Pathway (15mC)

The 15mC-projects suggested for funding in DUT Call 2022 will work on better understanding and promoting active and sustainable mobility, improving urban accessibility, and strengthening tools and planning procedures for 15-minute neighbourhoods. One in four projects focuses on an innovation approach, and will thus develop and demonstrate a new tool, product, or procedure. The projects in the 15mC Pathway will involve more than 300 project partners, based in 18 different EU- and 4 non-EU countries, with approximately 30% active in public institutions and city administrations. With 12 projects, more than half decided to focus on issues regarding mobility and logistics in low-density areas, sub- or peri-urban areas. Generally, there seems to be a good mix between projects that concentrate on institutional innovation (e.g. in better or more inclusive planning processes), social practices and behaviour, and technological solutions.

Circular Urban Economies Pathway (CUE )

The CUE-projects suggested for funding in DUT Call 2022 share a common goal of enhancing urban sustainability and inclusivity. They encompass a wide range of areas, including researching grassroots innovations for sustainable urban transitions, developing tailored circular economy tools for smaller cities, and examining consumer interest in circular housing and its impact on urban development. These projects also explore sustainable sharing practices for urban transformation and study the essential circular principles for revitalizing public spaces.

Project Participation

In the 48 projects suggested for funding 612 partners are participating. These partners, including main applicants, co-applicants, and cooperation partners, represent a broad variety of actors. (Cooperation partners are partners that are not eligible for funding from Funding Agencies).
